Hold a long, deep breath in as long as you can

Now, don't asphyxiate yourself, LOL! Take a few deep breaths, then hold the last one in for a while. Use the compression of the air in your lungs to push downward on your diaphragm. If it doesn't work the first time, try it several more. The idea is to stretch your diaphragm in order to prevent the spasms.

Breathe into a paper bag

Grab a small paper bag. Not a plastic bag, and not a huge paper grocery sack, but the kind of paper bag you'd carry a lunch in to school. Now, breath in and out of it for a while. The paper bag is porous enough that you won't suffocate yourself, but it will constrict the flow of oxygen to your brain enough to trick the diaphragm into operating normally. If this doesn't work within a minute, take a few breaths of normal air and try again, or move on to another method.

Drink a glass of water with a knife or spoon pressed against your temple.

I have no idea why this one works. Perhaps it's all mental, but if you take a full glass of water and hold it with a butter knife or spoon against your temple as you drink it, sometimes it works! It's the mystery of hiccup-cure science!

Drink water upside down and backwards.

This one has always worked well for me. It's hard to explain, but basically you fill up a cup with water, then bend over at your waist as far as you can. Now, holding that position, drink all of the water from the cup. I've found it also helps if you take a deep breath before you begin. It might be better just to provide a video, so here ya go!

Drink black mustard seed tea

Use about a cup of water and add 1 teaspoon of black mustard seed. Boil it for several minutes. Strain the water, and drink it once it is lukewarm. Yes, you'll have to have a kitchen and black mustard seed, but if your hiccups are gone it will be worth the effort!

Force a hard, deep cough

Since hiccups are a result of diaphragm spasms, this one makes more sense than some. Take a deep breath and force several hard coughs. Repeat. Repeat yet again. This is supposed to trick your diaphragm and stop the hiccups. As always, your mileage may vary.

Hold your breath, close your ears, and swallow continuously

Just as it says in the title, you do these three things simultaneously. There's something about combining these things in conjunction that causes it to work for some.

Eat a tablespoon of sugar

Some people say this one works. Just swallow a spoonful of granulated sugar. It sounds tasty, but it can actually cause you to gag - but it works! Perhaps not the best cure for those with diabetes, but if you don't then it's worth a try.
